Lake Moxie Camps is one of the oldest and most renowned sporting camps in the East. Well over a century ago we were hosts to sports, from around the globe, who would take the train from New York, Hartford, and Boston for a summer holiday at Lake Moxie. Still known for its great hunting and fishing, the area is now a mecca for world class whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking, and mountain biking.

Located in the heart of Maine's great wilderness, on the banks of beautiful Lake Moxie. Lake Moxie Camps is easily accessible by automobile, just five miles off of Route 201 in The Forks, Maine. One of the reasons to stay at Lake Moxie Camps is it's convenient access to both the Kennebec and Dead Rivers.

We'll give you the pack off our backs, as well as a water bottle, map, compass and first aid kit, for a one day hike, on the famous Appalachian Trail, to the summit of Moxie Bald Mountain. We'll do nearly anything to help you enjoy our Maine woods!

Whitewater Rafting on the Kennebec River
Class IV & V May - October

Our Kennebec River trip begins at Harris Dam on Indian Pond. It's not long before the calm clear waters begin to churn white and the speed of the river begins to pick up. Just ahead can be heard the roar of whitewater as we enter the steep granite walls of the Kennebec Gorge. From this point on, the river plunges through the gorge creating large wave rapids like "Big Mama", "Whitewasher" and "the Alleyway". The run through classic V Magic Falls is always the high point for rafters and guides alike.

About half way down the river we stop at our beach for a hearty riverside lunch. After lunch we take a less stressful approach to the river. The river meanders through beautiful deep Maine forests. This provides a perfect opportunity to swim one of the many small rapids, or to soak up the sunshine.

The Kennebec River flows 7 days a week all season long and the river temperature is known to reach into the high 60s.

A Kennebec Super Trip is an adventure you will not soon forget. We try to pack as much adventure as possible into two days. Starting at the headwaters of the Kennebec, we explore over twenty-three miles of this wilderness river.

On the first day, you get your choice of a one or two person inflatable kayak, whitewater canoe, or small raft to challenge the class II & III whitewater of the East Outlet. This fun whitewater river empties into a remote section of Indian Pond, where we meet the float airplane for the flight back to Lake Moxie Camps. The view from the airplane is of vast forest lands, mountains, lakes, rivers and quite often a moose or deer.

On the second day of your adventure, you raft the thundering class IV & V whitewater rapids in the Kennebec Gorge. Two nights in a cabin or Bed and Breakfast may be arranged for an additional charge.

Whitewater Rafting on the Dead River
"High Water Releases" 16 miles of continuous class IV - V whitewater.
Select weekends in May, June, September and October.
Call for specifics 1-800-866-6943

The Dead River is a true wilderness river. Special high water dam releases on select weekends insures this rafting trip is fast and furious, with rapids rating a solid class IV - V. Combine this trip with a Kennebec river trip for a full weekend of whitewater.

During summer months, the Dead River calms down and provides an ideal river trip for families with younger children or those looking to raft intermediate whitewater. Using smaller rafts or inflatable kayaks, the trip offers you a lot of fun whitewater. All trips are accompanied by guides and include a picnic lunch.

Whitewater Rafting on the Penobscot River
Technical class IV - V whitewater, breathtaking scenery, wildlife, and waterslides.
May - September

Mile high Mount Kathadin and Baxter State Park provide the backdrop for the East's most challenging stretch of whitewater. In the first two miles the river rushes through the spectacular Ripogenus Gorge with rapids like "Exterminator", living up to its name. After the first two miles the river alternates between flat water and class III and IV whitewater. Wildlife is abundant and sightings of moose and eagles is not uncommon.

Penobscot River "Double Trouble"

This trip allows you to run the class V whitewater of the Ripogenus Gorge and Cribworks rapids twice the same day. The action is non-stop, fast and furious! Prior experience is required. Available weekdays and select weekends.
